Ultrasound is a safe and pain free process of using sound waves to produce and gather images inside of the body. Ultrasounds are beneficial because the images produced are in real-time and show the structure and movement of internal organs. This process is a non-invasive way to identify, diagnose and treat potential medical conditions.
What Is A Sonohysterography?
A sonohysterography is an ultrasound technique that is minimally invasive and is able to produce internal images of a woman’s uterus. A sonohysterography is performed to help doctors identify and diagnose unexplained vaginal bleeding. This technique is a valuable method for evaluating vaginal bleeding which may be occurring due to various uterine abnormalities. Some of the most common abnormalities may include:
- Congenital defects
- Endometrial atrophy
- Endometrial adhesions
- Fibroids
- Malignant lesions
- Polyps
In addition to identifying and diagnosing unexplained vaginal bleeding, a sonohysterography may also be used to search for uterine abnormalities for women who have a history of miscarriages or infertility issues.
Sonohysterography Preparation
Since a sonohysterography is a minimally invasive procedure, preparing for the exam is rather simple. It is recommended that women wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing and leave jewelry at home. About one week after menstruation is the ideal time to have a sonohysterography, as the endometrium is at its thinnest, which is the best time to evaluate whether or not the endometrium is normal.
