Raleigh Gynecology& Wellness is committed to providing a comfortable and stress-free experience for all of our patients. To further this commitment, we are proud to offer nitrous oxide as an option for specific office procedures and exams. Nitrous oxide, commonly known as “laughing gas,” has been safely used in medical settings for many years, including childbirth and dentistry, to help patients relax and manage discomfort.
What is Nitrous Oxide?
Nitrous oxide is a gas that you inhale through a mask, helping to slow down your body’s response to pain. Its calming, euphoric effects can ease anxiety, making gynecologic procedures and exams more tolerable. While it doesn’t put you to sleep, it allows you to feel more relaxed and at ease during your treatment.
Is Nitrous Oxide Right for You?
If you find gynecological exams or procedures challenging or uncomfortable, nitrous oxide may be the perfect solution for you. Many women feel anxious or uneasy during pelvic exams or treatments, and some even avoid visiting a gynecologist because of this. Nitrous oxide can help alleviate these feelings, allowing you to complete your treatment with greater comfort and peace of mind. Speak with your doctor ahead of your appointment to determine if nitrous oxide is a good option for you.
The Experience
Nitrous oxide is colorless, odorless, and entirely patient-controlled. Once you start inhaling it, the effects typically take a few minutes to begin working. Throughout your procedure, you remain conscious and in control, able to communicate with your doctor as needed. Since the effects wear off quickly, there’s no need for a lengthy recovery period afterward.
Though most patients experience a calming and pleasant sensation, a few may feel slightly dizzy or light-headed for a short period. These sensations subside quickly after stopping the nitrous oxide.
Procedures Offering Nitrous Oxide
At Raleigh Gynecology & Wellness, nitrous oxide is available for a variety of gynecological procedures, including:
- IUD insertions
- Colposcopies
- Routine pelvic exams for patients who experience anxiety
However, nitrous oxide may not be suitable for everyone. Certain medical conditions or medications could make it inadvisable. Be sure to discuss your medical history with your provider to ensure that nitrous oxide is the right choice for you.
Cost and Insurance Coverage
While nitrous oxide can provide immense relief, it is important to note that this option is not covered by most insurance plans. At Raleigh Gynecology & Wellness, the fee for nitrous oxide use is $125 per procedure.
