Vaginitis is an inflammation of the vagina caused by an infection, which often results in vaginal discharge, burning & itching sensations. There are four common types of vaginitis, including:
- Bacterial Vaginosis
- Yeast Infections
- Trichomoniasis
- Atrophic Vaginitis
Treatment and care of vaginitis depends on which type is present.
Common Symptoms
Signs and symptoms of vaginitis can vary, but the most common symptoms include:
- Irregular inflammation
- Unusual pain during sex
- Experiencing pain when urinating
- Vaginal bleeding and/or spotting
- Itching & irritation
- Foul odors & discoloration of discharge
Causes Of Vaginitis
The most common cause of vaginitis is infection, however the root cause of vaginitis depends on the type. Some less common causes of vaginitis include gonorrhea, herpes, chlamydia, various parasites and poor hygiene. Vaginitis has also been attributed to allergic reactions to douches, soaps, perfume, lubricants and condoms. The risk of vaginitis can increase due to factors such as:
- Antibiotics
- Pregnancy
- Douching & using vaginal products
Vaginitis Care & Treatment
Methods of vaginitis care and treatment depend on the cause, but typically involve the application of topical steroids, antibiotics or antibacterial creams. You should contact a doctor if you are feeling vaginal pain or discomfort and if you are involved with or experiencing any of the following:
- If you are sexually active with multiple partners or have recently been sexually active with a new partner
- If you are having pelvic pain
- Have a fever or chills
- A prior history with vaginal infections
