Raleigh Gynecology & Wellness offers annual GYN wellness screening for women. This includes regular checkups to screen for breast and cervical cancer. We will often address additional topics such as family planning and contraception, nutrition and exercise, certain immunizations, infectious disease exposure and management, and behavioral health. Our team is dedicated to improving the health and wellness of our patients and will provide comprehensive gynecologic screening services regardless of age or health.
Screening Services We Offer
We provide annual gynecologic exams that include checking vital signs as well as height and weight. Our GYNs will discuss menstrual cycles and/or menopausal symptoms with the patient. Raleigh Gynecology & Wellness can also administer an HPV vaccine, as well as assist with birth control and perform STD testing for sexually active patients.
Pelvic Exam and Pap Smear
For women over the age of 21, we generally begin performing annual pelvic exams and regular Papanicolaou tests (pap smear). During a pelvic exam, our GYN will use a speculum, a small metal instrument, to gently separate the walls of the vagina. This allows your doctor to collect the pap smear to check for cervical cancer. If needed, additional testing can be done to check for STDs, yeast infections, or other infections. This is generally followed by an internal exam to assess the uterus an ovaries.
Breast Examination and Mammogram
For adult women, Raleigh Gynecology & Wellness begins performing breast examinations. A clinical breast exam is used to detect changes such as breast lumps or nipple discharge that could indicate the presence of breast cancer. Beginning at age 40, mammograms are recommended to help detect early breast cancers. Some women who are at higher risk for breast cancer based on family history or other risk factors may require earlier or additional breast cancer screening.
